Wet Bank Holiday Monday #2!

Posted on 9th May 2012 in Weather

So that’s four weeks now of showers and for the first year in many we can say we have seen April Showers! Today I noticed that the winterborne river through the Tarrant Valley has finally started flowing following a winter of a dry bed and that shows that the water has finally penitrated the land and popped back up through the chalk valley springs. May has started wet so does this mean having had a month of April Showers that the weather patern this year may actually follow the seasons and give us a Sunny Summer???

Another Dry March…

Posted on 25th March 2012 in Weather

Well here is another dry one, a few showers spread through the first half of the month but the weather as a whole has been dry and mild over the winter months and now temperatures are increasing before we have had any of our traditional spring showers. This seems to be a repeat of recent years as the jet stream moves north and draws a warmer sunnier period in for March.

Has Spring arrived…

Posted on 26th February 2012 in Spring Advice

…what a beautiful day in Dorset, our Cherry Blossom has really started blooming today and it was only Tuesday when I first noticed any signs of life. Having already cut our lawn earlier in the week, we spent the day with dogs, kids and friends on top of local Dorset hills and in a good local Country Pub but I couldn’t help noticing the distinct hint of fresh cut grass in the air and rumbles of mowers coughing into action…did you get your grass cut today? Remember just a light topping of a 1/3rd off the top now and then again in a few weeks time will be just perfect. Keep the lawns tidy now and you will save the ridiculous ‘harvest’ that so many amateur gardeners do in late March or April.

Soooooo glad to see…

Posted on 18th February 2012 in Weather

…a drop of rain today, it’s just soooooo important for our work that we get regular rainfall. In recent years we have suffered more and more with blocking events which cause long periods of weather but so far this year it’s brought a bit of everything the way the good olde British weather should be…still well down on long term rainfall with many national resevoirs very low. So next time you get caught out in a shower, smile and don a rain coat and enjoy…you’ll often find me running or dog walking in the rain, however that said, rain in the summer just frustrates me…

Fresh Cut Grass!

Posted on 12th February 2012 in Spring Advice

You should always look to get one cut in during January/February, so find a mild but dry day and get those mowers out and lightly take the top off the grass to ready them for the looming Spring flush of growth. I know that frost is likely but just make sure that your mower is sharp enough and then you will ‘cut NOT tear’ the grass. A light frost in the tips of a recently cut blade of grass is not going to do any lasting damage, however leaving the grass to grow and then trying to ‘harvest’ it in the middle of a wet weekend in March is very damaging!!! Get organised and get a cut in NOW.

Wintery Lawns

Posted on 12th February 2012 in Spring Advice

As we come out of the winter months with a very cold February the lawns are looking a little wintery. Moss and disease was a big problem at the end of last year with mild spells and some grass has died back in places to leave a thinner looking lawn. The February application of light feed and moss control will help green up the grass and wake it from the winter whilst browning the moss and stopping it from taking over. A light scarify is advised in March with some remedial works for seeding before the big push of spring feed in March/April. I have heard stories of some of the franchise teams scarifying through January! It is no coincidence that none of the lawncare books will concur with this…
